OUR ORPHANS NEED YOUR
HELP!
Americus November 7, 2011 The canine and feline orphans
at the Sumter Humane Society (SHS) urgently need the help of
city and county residents as well as anyone who cares about
the health and well-being of our four legged friends. Because
of the recent giardia outbreak, some wonderful changes are
being made to make their stay at the shelter healthier and
happier. Unfortunately, these changes are very expensive and
the SHS is struggling to make them a reality.

Firstly, with the assistance of local veterinarians Dr.
Crawford, Dr. Harper and Dr. Sawyer, the shelter has
instituted an intensive intake process for all new
animals. Each dog or cat has its temperature taken and a
complete exam including checking its eyes, ears, coat and
nails. We check for parasites, de-worm, and in many cases
give a distemper and kennel cough vaccine, or test and
vaccinate for feline leukemia. They receive a bath, food
and water, and a clean, dry place to stay. Each animal
spends five days in quarantine and gets an exam each day
while we attempt to find its owner. During the five days,
we determine if the animal should be made available for
adoption, sent to a rescue or; in case of sickness or
injury, the animals suffering is put to an end. This is a
very extensive process and requires two individuals just
to clean the quarantine area daily and another staff
member to do evaluations and intakes. During the 10 days
between October 27th and November 5th, the SHS took in 25
cats and 65 dogs for a shocking total of 90 animals! Each
and every one of these orphans went through this
quarantine process. |

In addition to the staggering number of man hours required to
manage just this one section of the shelter, we also have our
adoptable animals which are housed in two dog kennels, a cat
room and two cat colonies, the puppy and small dog kennel as
well as a treatment room; all of which must be cleaned
multiple times daily, watered and fed one to two times a day.
Other expenses include vaccines, de-wormer, disinfecting
cleaners, sprays and wipes, latex gloves and plastic aprons,
dog food, cat food, cat litter, paper towels, laundry soap,
dish soap, the list goes on and on. In addition, any animal
that needs veterinary care must be looked at and prescribed
medications given. This all costs money. |
Another huge project that
has recently been undertaken is the construction of individual
concrete exercise runs adjacent to the dog kennels. Because
the former dirt runs were impossible to clean and disinfect,
the Board of Directors took a huge leap of faith and
authorized the expenditure of over $20,000 to ensure that all
of our dogs are able to spend multiple times per day outside
breathing fresh air and getting the exercise they need to
remain as

and physically fit as
possible while they await moving to a loving family home. Once
the fencing is completed, as many as seven dogs at a time can
be released to safely run, play, bark and soak in the
sunshine. There will also be areas for the puppies and some of
the cats to run free and get in some serious play time.
Please help us! Because of these recent large
expenditures, the SHS has seriously depleted its operating
funds. Without the financial support of all of our animal
loving friends, there will not be enough money to give
every adoptable orphan the opportunity to find a home with
a caring man, women, or child. The SHS is a non-profit
organization and is managed by an all volunteer Board of
Directors, but we can’t do it all. As 2011 comes to a
close, please consider helping to save the life of just

Society – We’re Back and Better Than Ever
The Sumter Humane
Society (SHS) is back in full operation effective October 27th and we
are better than ever! After our recent bout of Giardia, we are happy to
report that we are now open for adoptions and taking in animals. All of
our current animals have had intensive health checkups and have been
treated; and all follow-up testing has been negative. In addition, the
entire facility has been deep cleaned and disinfected. Now is a great
time to add a new four-legged member to your family.
We are also happy to
announce new and improved protocols when animals are accepted into the
facility. An entire section has been set up as our quarantine area where
new arrivals will receive extensive health evaluations, be de-wormed and
in most cases receive vaccinations. As in the past, dogs and cats will
be held a full five days to give owners ample time to come in and claim
their lost pet. The only exception to this rule is if an animal is
severely injured or seriously ill.
The SHS urges all pet
owners to use whatever means possible to make identification of their
pets as easy as possible. A collar with rabies tags attached is always
the best method. If your pet was adopted from the SHS, it will have a
microchip which can be scanned and provides easy identification. We will
also microchip your pet for the low cost of $25. Just call 229-924-0268

To celebrate our
re-opening, we are continuing our Catober / Dogvember adoption
special. Adopt any of our special pets for only $65, which includes
spay/neuter, vaccines, FELV/FIV (cats), Heartworm test (dogs) microchip
and 30 days free pet insurance.
Trick or Treat! Bring
your child dressed in costume to the shelter on October 31st between
1:00 and 5:00pm and have their picture taken with one of our VIP’s (Very
Important Pets)! All pictures will be posted on the SHS website.

Position: Volunteer Coordinator
This is not a
paying position. It is strictly a volunteer position.
Hours: will be very
flexible; will ordinarily set their own schedule
Preferred Qualifications: Prefer
history of employment in the veterinary or grooming industry; history of
using photo editing software, and experience with basic website updates
and/or managing photographs on a basic website.
General
Job Description:
Would train in
every aspect of every job within the shelter to train other volunteers.
Would receive all volunteer applications, train those volunteers, and set
schedules for each volunteer. Once a volunteer was completely trained,
they would move up to a higher level in order to train new volunteers.
*We are in dire need of a volunteer coordinator. We have
so many people offering to volunteer, but with limited staff, we do not
have the resources to train each volunteer. Please consider doing
something meaningful and worthwhile. All of the animals within our shelter
would benefit from whoever is chosen for this position.
*Please fill out an application at SHS anytime between
12pm-5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, or 12pm-4pm on Saturdays.

GA State Law requires Rabies shot once per year for all dogs and cats.
TO NEGLECT YOUR ANIMAL IS A CRIME!!
EXAMPLES OF NEGLECT ARE:
*Lack of sufficient food and water
*Dirty or contaminated food or water
*Animal left in the sun with no possibility of shade
*Exposure to extreme heat, cold, or rain
*Leaving a collar on a dog that cuts into its neck
*Severe weight loss of an animal due to internal parasites
left
untreated
*Untreated injury, mange mites, ticks or fleas
*Unsanitary living conditions
*Animal tethered to a chain too short for the animal to
move.
*Abandonment of an animal (leaving the animal to survive on
its own or leaving it for someone else to care for without
notification).
*Abusing or mistreating the animal in any way is cruelty and

fighting.

Spay/Neuter Excuses
We hear excuses every
day on why people don't spay and neuter their animals. We
want everyone to know that there is NO EXCUSE! If you plan
on breeding your animal, you must have a breeder's license
from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. We have a very
affordable Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program. Please contact
the shelter for details on how you would qualify. Our
stipulations have changed, if you didn't previous qualify,
you certainly may now! It isn't uncommon for Sumter Humane
Society to receive 40+ kittens and 30+ puppies in
one day. These numbers are astronomical, and they
can be prevented!
